New waste and recycling council formed

Five of Australia’s waste management and recycling heavyweights have joined forces to establish a new organisation to champion the industry.

Cleanaway, JJ Richards, Remondis, SUEZ and Veolia have agreed to form the National Waste & Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC), which will act as the industry’s national policy-setting body.

An open invitation has been extended to other waste and recycling companies with a national presence to join the Council.

PwC slams ACT's NOWaste over Mugga Lane crisis

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has released a report detailing poor management practises at the ACT's NOWaste following the Mugga Lane capacity crisis. 

The independent review of follow the complete exhaustion of airspace at Canberra's only landfill, which occurred earlier this year. In response, the ACT's Territory and Municipal Services authority was forced to reopen the Capital's closed (and emergency) landfill at West Belconnon.

Port Macquarie-Hastings issues $75 million in contracts

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has awarded two ten year contracts collectively worth $75 million.

The first is a 10 year collection contract awarded to JR and EG Richards, valued at $48.4 million with options to extend for a further two years. At the same time Council awarded the contract for organics receival and processing to Remondis at a cost of $27.10 million for 10 years with an option to extend for a further two years.

Lake Macquarie and Remondis sign composting deal

Lake Macquarie's long running organics diversion program has taken another step forward with the signing of a deal for a new composting facility.

The Council is in desperate need of the facility, with its primary Awaba landfill site close to capacity, and only operating via an application to expand granted in May 2013. Extending the reprieve on the facility is the new composting plant, built via a $6 million investment. It is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2014.
